Music Videos

Music videos was a big thing in the 80's and even part of the 90's. With cable tv channels like Mtv, CMC and VH1 and the late night weekend show Night Tracks that was on a regular channel, we were able to see music in a creative way. Mtv was the first channel to do this. It gave a different way for our favorite artist to be creative and to tell their story.  It had my generation glued to that freakin' tv hoping to catch our favorites. Even if I didn't like a song, I still enjoyed watching a video - sometimes. It gave us another way to dance in our living rooms (hoping no one would catch us) and to discover new music having us rush out to the nearest record store to pick up the hottest song. It was also a way to give artist more publicity which I'm sure help create more sales. Those videos also would create lots of conversations at schools asking "did you see so and so's video?" Shows like Mtv also helped launch new artist like Madonna.

The videos did so much for us, for our culture and for artist everywhere. Michael Jackson was one of the artist that blew up the video scene when he came out with his videos like 'Billie Jean', 'Beat it', and the very popular 'Thriller'.  He set the bar high with 'Thriller' and blew people's minds and was the first mini film video. Even if you don't like Michael Jackson, you have to admit that it is an awesome video especially for that time period. The video industry pushed artist to come up with that awesome video.

Another person who I thought was creative with their videos was Cyndi Lauper. Her videos were always weird, corky and yet fun and entertaining. Madonna did sexy videos with 'Like a virgin' and 'Material Girl', having girls everywhere wanting to dress like her. Rock videos had rockers head banging and trying to do air guitar right along with the videos.

Music videos then came with their own award shows and always gave the press even more to talk about when it came to "pop-stars", both good and bad. Madonna was talked about A LOT with the videos she came out with. There was also some talk about Prince's video 'When doves cry', Michael Jackson doing his crotch grabbing, Cyndi Lauper when she had the big orange hair and 'We are the world' which created good talk.

I miss those days. The videos back then were very creative and entertaining. The songs were better. It was something to relax to and enjoy. The feelings one would get when they saw a video from their favorite artist is indescribable. It was almost like a high. We could forget about our troubles just by vegging out in front of the tv with our music.

Today, it just isn't the same. Mtv isn't a music television anymore. Well maybe during the wee hours of the night/morning but that's it. VH1 is the same. Artist stopped putting a lot of creativity into their videos. It could be about money, because they don't get seen as much or maybe both. It's really sad. Yes we may have youtube but it's not the same. Sure I get very excited when my favorite artist  puts out a video and I enjoy it very very much but there will always be something missing (not at all the artist fault)  and that's seeing the videos on tv. It just has a different vibe. Most videos don't get a lot of notice, don't get talked about in the media much (unless it's a bad review) and it doesn't do a whole lot for the artist because they don't get noticed much(is my take on it). A lot of money goes into videos but hardly any money gets made from them.

There needs to be an actual music channel to bring back the old videos and new ones. We will always go to youtube for videos but to just turn on the tv and kick back with different videos playing is better. Plus not every video is on youtube. Some even get taken down because of copyrights. If they are on tv, there is none of that happening. There still are some very creative, simple and entertaining videos with stories like 'Roar', "E.T.', 'Born this way', 'Have a nice day', 'Black out the sun' just to name a few. It just seems like there is less and less. I know this is a new era but there still needs to be a good ol' music channel. The 80's were awesome for so many different reasons. I love music videos. They are awesome and could be watched all day long. I want my Mtv. :)

The Best Fan Club

Fan clubs, they have been around for a very long time. Back in the day, one would join a fan club and write to their favorite star, they would in return get newsletters, contest to enter and maybe a "signed" photo. Sometimes you might even get other little things that would make a kid and/or teen heart pound with excitement  Getting that special thing just for them, from their star was just the best thing ever.

I remember those days. I myself was in a few; Donny and Marie Osmond (hey I was a little kid), Michael Jackson (newsletters and a certificate) and New Kids On The Block (a "signed" photo, a membership card, a birthday card every year, newsletters etc). Even though it was "meaningless" things, it would brighten up my day. For those few moments, my worries, fears and bad days of a bullied insecure girl were washed away. Never in my wildest dreams would I think that when I grew up, I could still be in a fan club and get even more out of it than I did when I was a kid.

Things have changed A LOT since the 70's - 80's. Today, fan clubs are online.  To get updates on your favorite star (sports person etc), all you have to do is follow them on twitter, facebook and other social medias. Fan clubs online are pretty much like they used to be back in the day except you get your info, join contest etc right away. There is only one that I have joined since being an adult and I am more than happy that I did (more on that later).

I really don't know much about what goes on in other fan clubs but by reading about the FC, I can tell they are your average fan club. The only difference is, you get to interact with other fans. This can actually be great a thing. Talking with people from other parts of the world, meeting new people who share the same interest and maybe even making new friends. Those things are priceless. It's what you get out of one that really matters.

That being said, the way some of the fan clubs are being run is not so great. Different clubs do different things that make it not so great. There is one fan club though that I personally love, think it's the best and will never forget. Darren Hayes.

If you don't know who he is, here is a run down: In the 90's there was a band called Savage Garden. They had hits like, 'Truly, Madly, Deeply' and 'I knew I love you'. Darren was the singer. After the break up shortly after their second album, Darren went on to do his own music. He's made four amazing albums and one digital side project that just recently was released on CD.

I have been a fan since the 90's. Didn't know he went solo until 2007 (see an older blog about this journey click here). When I re-discovered him, I fell in love with his music all over again. I couldn't join his fan club when I found out there was one. I could be wrong but I believe I joined the club in 2009.  I am so glad I did.

I had no idea what to expect. This might sound crazy but I was also nervous and a little scared. Nervous and scared to join a fan club? Yes. I have social anxiety although I just recently discovered this and just thought I was really shy. The thought of interacting with anybody can really scare me. Knowing this, I not only just wanted to join his fan club but I HAD to join.

Everyone there welcomed me and was very nice. I knew some people from myspace so that made it a little easier.  It was like going to the first day of school (without the bullying) and seeing a few people from the year before and not knowing others.

I have now been there for about four years. Even though it has been a short time, the FC has meant a lot to me for different reasons. It's a family. A lot of us understands where each one comes from, having similar backgrounds. If one needs to vent happy, sad, fear etc, we know there is always someone there to listen. As scared as I have been, I have been able to push myself and go out of my comfort zone. That alone has been a ride.

The people that run the FC including Darren's sister, has been amazing. They work really hard, have done an awesome job and I very much appreciate it. Everyone is so sweet. Darren, the person that brought us together. I just can't say enough how thankful I am. He is one of us. He is down to earth, very funny, caring, understanding and is willing to listen when we need to talk. He is an inspiration and a beautiful person inside and out. He is more like a friend than someone who is in the public eye if that makes sense. Sometimes it is very hard for me to get the right words out. I don't think I would be the person I am if I didn't have the awesome experiences in the FC.

For me, it's not a FC, it's another family. When it closes, I will miss it. I know there still will be something there, I will still be able to talk to some of the people I have gotten to know and Darren will still be around but it won't be quite the same. I am very thankful and grateful for time spent there and everything that came with it.

I know everyone not only needs a break but deserves one. I wish everyone who has helped run the FC and all the fans the very best. I can't what what's to come for 2014. Darren, I hope your new dreams will come true. Thank you for everything you do. You are really an amazing guy.

Here's to the past and the future with new and different journeys.

Special Video Message

This is a touching message that singer/song writer Darren Hayes done not only for his fans but for anyone to share with the ones they love. Last Sunday Darren sent out a message on Twitter & Facebook for anyone who wanted a free hug, to look out for a tweet where he will be & he would give free hugs to anyone who showed up. These hugs were recorded by a friend of his & his husband. The video clips were then put together in a video to send a touching message.

The song that plays in the video his Darren's newest single called 'Bloodstained Heart' from his new album 'Secret Codes and Battleships'. This song is about being there for someone you truly care about. That no matter what someone is going through, you are willing to do be there as they fall, wanting to take their pain away. It could also be how you need someone to catch you when you are falling. The meaning & message is powerful. To share that love & hugs with someone is priceless & is something that no amount of money can buy. I wanted to share this video with anyone & everyone. If there is someone out there you feel this about, share this message with them. You can also check out the full song & original video on youtube which is just as powerful. At some point I will have my own review on the album in my reviews blog (hopefully soon).

Darren Hayes New Album

It has been revealed, the album cover of Darren Hayes's upcoming album 'Secret Codes and Battleships'. I absolutely just love the cover. When I first saw it, I thought of Michael Jackson's 'Dangerous' album. It's full of color, has all kinds of different images together making one awesome cover.

When I saw the cover, I got all excited again for the album. I can't wait to hear what Darren has to say. Darren has a very unique voice. I love how he can do all these different ranges and has so much control. I just love it. He also knows how to put things into words when know one else can. Darren just has such amazing talent. I really hope this album soars everywhere. He truly deserves it. He puts so much hard work into everything he does.

Darren's talent is just one part of him. He is so down to earth, funny and sweet. Very interesting guy as well. I have never met him but I hope I get to some day and if/when I do, I really hope my shyness doesn't kick in or I become overwhelmed.

This has been an amazing journey. I didn't know about Darren's solo career to have been on the past rides (just thought after Savage Garden that was it, see past blog about my Darren journey 2009 Dec.). I love how Darren revealed everything. Sending out coded messages couple times a week having us trying to break the code. Whoever was the first one to guess each code, not only got recognition, but also got a canvas painting that went with the message. On the canvas was the message and on the back his signature. I was lucky enough to be one of the people to guess first. I never win things like this. Even if we didn't get anything, I still would have done it and been just as happy. I am also not to big on signatures simply because celebs are just people like us with really cool jobs. I do have to say though, the painting & message I won does mean a lot to me. I didn't think I would win one. Darren didn't have to do this and yet he did.

The vlogs Darren has been doing to take us along the journey have been awesome. Every little step that has been taken has been exciting and I am truly grateful for being able to be apart of it. The other fans that I have gotten to know has also been an awesome journey. I love getting to know everyone. This journey has also been helping me deal with my insecurities. I have a ways to go but have come along way. A big thank you to all the connections I have made. You know who you are.

Darren if you happen to read this, I would just like to say a very big thank you. I know I say it a lot and so do others but it's true. Thank you for taking time out of your day to go in the chats, interacting with us in other ways, sharing a part of you with us and just being so real with us. You're an awesome guy and truly deserve the best in life. Big love. XO

My Darren Hayes story

I have been a fan of Darren Hayes since SG (Savage Garden) but at the time I didn't know Darren or Daniel's name. At that point in my life there was so much going on that I couldn't find out their names or who they were about (I also had a hard time getting to know Backstreet boys). I did know that once I heard 'Truly madly deeply' on the radio, I was hooked and knew I would love SG.

When the second album came out, I loved SG even more. I still didn't know anything about them though. I knew there was something special about Darren just from his eyes but I couldn't understand what it was at the time. It seems like not too long after 'Affirmation' came out, I heard that SG broke up. I can't remember how I heard about it but I knew I was sad that it happened.

Some time goes by and I get a computer of my own. I knew a little bit about computers but didn't know how to really use it to my advantage. Once I discovered amazon.com and started using it to help me find out about songs/music, I decided to see if SG had any more music out that I didn't know about and hoping that they did more music.

I saw the SG greatest hits cd which I did not know was out. Then I saw some cd's by someone by the name of Darren Hayes. I didn't know why those cd's were on the same page as SG but then I thought maybe one of them went on their own. I grabbed the 'Affirmation' cd and looked for their names and sure enough there was Darren Hayes. I was so happy. I then clicked to hear the sample music from his cd's that amazon does for most cd's. I instantly fell in love with the music and put them on my wish list.

In June of 2008 I decided to try out myspace. I didn't think I would be able to get into it but I decided to give it a shot. No more than a week into having myspace, I thought I would look to see if Darren had a page. Sure enough he did. I was then able to hear more of his songs and really liked them a lot.
I then started to read his blogs and spent 2-3 days reading all his myspace blogs. No I wasn't obsessed, I just wanted to know more about who he was as a person. I also went over to youtube and watched music videos that I never seen and interviews that he has done. The more I would find out the kind of person he is, the more I would like him. To me it's not just about the music or acting that makes me like someone, it's who they are on the inside.

Now I understand why yrs. ago when I looked into Darren's eyes in a pic, I knew there was something special (I know that sounds creepy and weird but I swear I'm sane; I can be a spiritual person to make it short). Darren really seems to be such an amazing person. I know you really can't tell who someone is through the computer but in some ways you can get a sense for people and who they are even by the computer. I can't really explain what I mean. I hope it made sense though.

I have never seen Darren in concert even during the SG days. I am hoping that will change in the coming years. I know it will be an amazing show. He knows how to put one on even if it's at a Borders (seen it from videos on youtube). I would also love to have the chance to meet him. I would have to make sure my shyness doesn't kick in though. I am shy with anybody that I meet for the first time.

Darren has a heart of gold, caring, funny as hell, so down to earth, compassionate, is not afraid to be himself even to his fans, honest, and he has a way with words. I love how he will talk to his fans about anything, play around (joke) with us, how he is goofy and treats us fans more like friends than fans. He is real and not fake like other artist. I know he has flaws like everyone else and that's ok. Can't forget that he is so very talented (an amazing voice and awesome song writer), creative and very very cute (blushing now). He is forever in my heart. I will always appreciate, respect and love him for everything he is and stands for. Darren......truly an amazing person inside and out.
